How cool to watch a Barn Owl like that - they are strictly nocturnal here.

Very impressive results from the States, you were really busy there. Especially enjoyed the Waders (yes, that ridiculously long-billed Long-bille Curlew in particular) and the Quail. Are you sure about Caspian Tern? Does not look massive enough IMO, and rump colour is wrong ...

Thanks @michael-ibk

I didn’t ID it in the field as I didn’t notice the difference (and I was mainly focused on the sea otters). It doesn’t fit with any of the other terns which occur there.

this is the other angle

Ok, for some reason this photo looks better to me for Caspian, and of course i know nothing about Terns in the States. So just forget about my comment. :)

Agree on the Barn Owl photos. I’ve never seen one in the daytime. Posting Bittern shots as duplicates is taking things a little too far, I think…:P

what a bill on that curlew! so that got me all curious if it had the longest bill in the world, and it turns out - according to Wikipedia that the long-billed curlew has bills as long as 21.9cm while the Far East Curlew's is shorter by 2cm. So the American bird won top spot.

I think June is around the only time you’ll see them in the daylight, due to the long days and need to feed chicks. It was approaching sunset, but I saw it a couple times at that sort of time in June and this year was my first sighting for that site, so it gives you an idea of how uncommon it is.

the bittern was consolation for believing the weather forecast and going out for a walk at 5.30, as I had woken up, only to be promptly rained on (as you can see from the photo). The light never improved :(

Excellent Bittern, and a wonderful Barn Owl sequence - really well photographed

(we saw Barn Owls in daylight late April last year in Norfolk, but I think what you say about feeding the chicks still applies)

On to July. This was the first record of this bird at the site and a UK lifer for me, although it seems it has been flying around the area for a month or so. I'm very glad I went for a an early Monday morning pre-work walk that day - something I have never done before! The photos are not great, as it was quite far away and I didn't have time to change the settings

I did also hear a turtle dove but could not locate it within the dense willow tree in which it was hiding...
