The Pleiades from the deck tonight.  I was going to drive up to the nearby granite rock and try and get distant lightning flickering.  A task for one of the next nights as this clear dry weather must break soon.

Can anyone get a good shot of the Southern Cross with the pointers?

Matt, I think tht might take some specialized equipment. A lens long enough to show up just one constellation will require either a relatively short exposure, resulting is very high iSO's, or a system to track the constellation.

I know such things exist, but have not seen any evidence that anybody here has such a thing.

Matt, I tried last night...  no way really. I think Peter is correct.   But anyway it was a spectacular couple of hours on top of a big granite hill with a moon rise.

The problem is that the cross just disappears into the rest of the thousands of stars...  It is in this photo, but anyone's guess which stars it is:

Apparently there is a 'rule of 600' (thanks google and then I later saw Peter had mentioned it already!)) whereby 600 divided by your focal length gives you a rough shutter speed.  So a 2sec exposure for say a 300mm is not really going to work I suppose.  Already I was getting way too much noise as I was using a wide angle zoom (8-16mm) which does not have a very wide aperture.  I was at F5, 30 sec exposures and 11mm focal length.  ISO was a very noisy 4000

@Game Warden

Matt, I looked through a bunch from last night again, I had tried to shine my torch on the approximate location of the Southern Cross.  Stupidly I had left the green laser star pointer at home (local friendly hunting concessionaire had invited me for dinner so I had a few under the belt when I decided to stop off at the rock!), that would have been so much better.  Anyway looking at the picture again I sort of think I can make out the cross...  It's an epic fail and I could be totally wrong - I am sure the astrophotogs would be dismayed,  but the thought counts I reckon!  :D

Cloudy tonight!

Yes, I think those are the two pointers below right of the red highlight circle in your torch beam? Alpha and Beta Centauri.
