Here is an article that I wrote with Laurent Cartier, currintly working on a PhD in Environmental Sciences on the sustainability of marine pearl farming at the University of Basel, about gemstones and conservation that you may find interesting:

A most interesting report. What do you know about Tanzanites?
But, in the gathering darkness, deep behind my soul, someone, something whispers "Africa"" (Mark Owens "Secrets of the Savannah")

Hi Samburumags,
Sorry for the delay but I missed your question.
Yes, I know about Tanzanite. I wrote an article few years ago about that stone after visiting merelani several times:

Dear all,
on the same issue, meaning gemstone and conservation. You might be interested to read my last field report about the ruby and sapphire discovery near Didy in Madagascar. A gem rush occurred but sadly the area where the discovery was made is part of the Zahamena - Ankeniheny corridor. I hope that this field report will interest people on both side of the issue from the gemstone industry to the people in charge of conservation and help conservationists and people from the gem industry to speak about such issue and find solutions that will benefit to all...
You can find the report on the GIA Laboratory Bangkok Field Report page:
http://www.giathai.n...eports_VP03.php
and in News from the Research on GIA main website:
