This is a Kafue lechwe, which ironically does not occur in Kafue National Park. They occur naturally only in the Kafue Flats which is due east of Kafue National Park. This photo is taken from a game ranch called Chaminuka in Lusaka. Note the dark legs and large horns.

You'll see some on day, I'm sure, Twaffle.

To those who have seen lechwe: I was hoping for another type of remark on my pics... (evil grin)

Nobody noticed anything "odd"?

:D

I'm cheating a bit here as I've been assured that these are Kafue Lechwe rather than Red Lechwe. They are definitley Lechwe though.

More Kafue Lechwe (Kobus leche kafuensis)

They have a bit more black on them than the Red lechwe, most noticeable on the shoulders of the rams.

More lechwe I'm afraid.

We had a group of between 30-40 of them that came and grazed right in front of us every evening and then slept nearby for the night.

On this particular morning the mountains were shrouded with cloud but the sun filtered through to light up this ewe and 2 lambs.

Although lechwe ewes give birth to only one lamb, I've observed that within the family group a ewe will suckle more than one lamb and that lambs of a similar age often stay together and follow the same ewe.
