Never Tiresome.JPG

Never Tiresome

Photographed at 7:19 am on 22 January, 2013 in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, using an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 200mm f/2.8L IS telephoto lens + EF 2x extender.

ISO 100, 1/125 sec., f/5.6, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual Exposure.

*****************************************************************************************************

During the May, 2015 safari in Masai Mara I was asked by a fellow lodge guest if I was ever tired of seeing or photographing impala.

The question took me aback, as impala are a safari highlight, no matter how seemingly ubiquitous they may seem.

I'll start tiring of impala when lilies lose their lustre in my eyes, when sunsets fail to turn my head and when butterflies seem like no more than bee-eater fodder.

Backward Glance

~ Photographed on 28 January, 2015 at 11:00 am in Samburu National Reserve, Kenya with an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 250, f/5.6, 1/1600 sec., 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

*********************************************************************************************************

The water shortage in the Samburu and Buffalo Springs area reduced the options for wildlife. There were few pools of clean water in the Ewaso Nyiro River from which to drink.

This male impala warily approached one such pool, ostensibly conscious of his vulnerability to predators — lionesses — in such an open, unprotected location.

He started to bend his head downwards for a thirst-quenching drink then abruptly stopped to look around. As it happened, his prudence was well-taken as a lion pride was nearby.

Yah, he did. He was very keen to see what the lions were up to. I passed the same place in the morning and I found the Impalas there but the lions had gone.

When I saw these impala, I asked Anthony to stop. There was a certain classic quality to the male standing to one side, the females spread out beside him in their version of a harem.

Such a paradox — each fully an individual yet reacting to potential threats as members of a group. Watching them watching us was a calming experience.
