We were passing through one of the more barren sections of Amboseli National Park, with low-growing grass between small jagged volcanic stones, the air warm and still.

After minutes without any sightings, this male Pallid Harrier was a welcome change. On the dry ground beside the track, it showed no inclination fly off, thereby facilitating this portrait.

 

Is it really a pallid harrier, Tom? To me it looks more like a Montague´s harrier.

I think it is Ayres´ Eagle Hieraaetus ayresii.

Until this safari, a satisfactory secretary bird portrait had eluded me. I'd photographed secretary birds on all safaris, yet when looking through images after returning home, they never captured the special quality of secretary birds.

This particular bird walked near us, providing a clear enough view to focus on its face. A light breeze blew through the grass, raising the ‘quill’ feathers on the back of its head.

This Martial Eagle was on one side of me, well lit.

 

This Tawny Eagle was on the other side of me, heavily backlit. It took some careful metering and a bit of work in post to get this image.

@Bushdog. A gold level guide has confirmed this as a juvenile Martial Eagle. That's what I'm going by.
