Wow there are some really interesting angles in this series. The last really captures the essence of a hunt.

This is the youngest cub we've seen...the guide said it was 4 weeks old. It could hardly walk and looked like a drunk in the video I took. Dave took this pic in the Mara 2006.

Incredible stuff - that pic of the Lion's eyes in between the buff carcass is a masterpiece!!! (so are the rest of them, actually)

Wild Dogger, was that babe alive when this was taken? Whats the story? Nice capture.

PCNW

the fawn was still alive on this capture.

The lioness caught it and carried it through the bushes, like she would normally carry her cubs. She licked its head, some kind of surreal. Like she wanted to tell her, I am sorry, but I´m hungry, and you are my food. Then she started eating it alive, without the death bite. I think the fawn was paralyzed and did not realize anything or suffer. But that´s all guessing.

I think the "Death bite" has nothing to do with killing the prey but is to subdue the prey for the safety of the predator to avoid flailing hooves & the like, with a young calf there is no need.

Some pictures of a great lion pride in the Masai Mara (about 16 lions) with their kill (Buffalo)

(Edited, Matt. Sorry Greens these image sizes are too big, please resize to +/- 1000 pix wide and repost. Thanks.)
