Finally starting to transfer photo's from last weeks trip to my computer - this one caught my eye - though it is a bit of a cliched sunset shot.

Taken in Mana Pools NP on the Zambezi foreshore between Mucheni 2 and 3.

Other than a little crop, straight from the camera.

A couple of years ago I was staying at Umlani Bushcamp (top spot) in Timbavati.

This elephant bull had left tracks everywhere but was proving elusive so our guide/ranger Moses set off on foot to find him.

 

When we caught up with him we were treated to a demonstration of just how destructive elephants can be. This guy was ripping up trees to get at the roots; he'd eat a small amount then wander off to rip up something else.

 

 

 

The first thing Moses did when he got back to the Land Rover was to drop his trousers and douse himself in RAID to get rid of all th ticks he'd picked up whilst on foot.

Tarangire NP in Tanzania is often overlooked by safari goers in their rush to get to Serengeti & Ngorongoro, but it is well worth a visit. Lots of elephants and the birding is first rate

Reading the appalling news about the calamitous decline in Tanzania's elephant population gave me the urge to look through my own elephant photos. Dreading what I will see on my next visit.

Could have gone in either elephants or lions, but the ele definitely came out on top!

Not technically the greatest photo (slow camera, slow lens, other excuses) but I do like this one of an ele showing a few lions who is boss!

 

We'd passed this young male ele along the road a few minutes earlier, and came across these three young lions, who were hanging about as lions do. The ele came up behind us, made a flanking move off to the right, and two or three minutes later let rip and charged the lions. They certainly got out of there fast (look at the expression of the one on the right )

I realised after starting a thread on Asian elephants that I hadn’t actually contributed any photos to this thread and after going back through the whole thread I can see there aren’t any photos of forest elephants so I thought I’d add some. They’re not new photos they’re all ones I’ve posted before just not in this thread.

 

Previously considered a subspecies of the African elephant Loxodonta africana the forest elephant is now generally recognised as a separate species in its own right Loxondonta cyclotis.

 

Forest elephants are taking a real hammering from poachers in certain areas because their ivory is highly prized for its slightly pinkish tinge and its hardness. In the DRC in particular significant numbers are also being killed for meat in very remote areas the meat is more valuable because it’s easier to sell than ivory.
