They were doing that for a good 30 seconds... do elephants get itchy?

Selinda 2005, Two images showing part of the biggest elephant aggregation I've ever seen. ...there were hundreds of them. 1st image taken with a 10D SLR & 100-400mm, the 2nd shot taken with an old film P&S so I could try and capture the scale of the event. Driving along the spillway that afternoon I stopped counting when I reached the 500th elephant. Needless to say the dust was thick and hung in the air.

This guy had just finished fighting an older bull. Notice the blood on his cheek (was on both sides). Namutoni area of Etosha, March 2012

This momma was one of the desert elephants we tracked in the Mowani region of Namibia.

It is not blood. The temporal glands in bulls excrete something when in musth. Read more here.

This photo was taken in Chitabe, Botswana, at a focal distance of 100mm and filled the frame - luckily for us, it was only a mock charge. We were being guided by the legendary Newman who knew the elephant well - he told us that although this bull can be a bit grumpy (because of his painful rotting tusk), he never intends to harm anyone. Apparently, this elephant would also mock charge any other animal that got too close.
