Swimming Cheetahs...

 

 

 

 

These two brothers are swimming across the flooded delta to re-unite with their brother - somewhere on the other side of the floods

I've uploaded this unusual series on Madaboutcheetah's behalf - I know MAC will be filling us in soon with the rest of the story.

The pictures above are from the Kwara concession, Botswana in Feb 2011. Given another year of high floods, it was a challenge going over to the Tsum Tsum plains that day...... after active tracking by our guides Hobbs and Spencer, our group came across two male cheetah (from the coalition of 3) on their own. They were moving along like they knew what they were doing - scent marking, contact calls to find their wandering brother etc etc., Obviously i was very anxious to know what had happened to the 3rd guy. They had to cross this large channel to get across. Believe me, it was quite an effort. The pictures above would not have been possible if not for two great guides - Spencer and Hobbs. It was a challenge driving into the water to get these shots. We took a while to catch up with the cheetah. Driving along and following the spoor ...... we ran into all 3 brothers having re-united in the setting Botswana sun.

 

To continue with the story - the following day, we got an early start to head back to the Tsum Tsum plains. The 3 brothers had disappeared without a trace. Even with the best guides, we just could not find them. Following day, we went back again with hope ...... found them and they took us into the woodland where they brought down an impala. We had two vehicles for our group - being the final full day, one part of the group went on the boat trip. One car did the tracking ...... we radioed and had Hobbs race the group, along with our lunch to Tsum Tsum. They were right on time to hunt with the cheetahs in the thickets. What fun!!!

 

Africa seldom disappoints .......... you never know what the day has in store for you!!! A word on current day Botswana and the high water situation. Yes, true ...... but, there's always a great time in store for you!!!

What 3 brothers, sniktawk?

 

Pangolin, the mom shot is amazing. What a wonderful pose. It was nice of them to see you off.

 

Here are two taken at MalaMala in 2006.

 

The mom has her head down and the 3 cubs are busy eating.

 

Here's a little cat fight that lasted about 2 seconds. Sadly, too much lens.

These are all so wonderful! One of my greatest pleasures would be to get one good cheetah photo on my trip in June with OAT to southern African parks. Has anyone ever seen a king cheetah?

Seen? Yes. In the wild? No.

 

The Ann van Dyk Cheetah Center, de Wildt not far from Pretoria specialises in breeding them. There's a photo of one in my 2005 gallery which I won't embed as it is not wild and not in the same league as the others here.

Haven't posted here on Safaritalk in a while but ready to jump back in.

Starting on this thread showing one of my favourite animals - all these cheetah images were taken in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park, one of THE best locations for viewing and photographing cheetah as they hunt for food daily in the dry riverbeds of this semi-desert. This is a self-drive location so all of these images were taken from parking spots at waterholes or from the main driveable roads.

I haven't looked at this thread for months... MY LOSS!! Page 6 is just a fabulous page of cheetah pictures. Just about covered the full range of behaviour I think!
