Self drive from US to points south

Has anybody ever done a trip all the way from the US to say.. Patagonia?

Anybody as anybody ever?! Quite many of them, in fact, and you can find plenty of their reports on the net. It is entirely doable adventure, and the only part you will have to leave the road is between Panama and Columbia; Darien Gap is still "no man territory".

My husband and his family drove to Colombia in the 70s, taking 6 months to do so. Hubby was 15 at the time. :)

I'm certainly not as intrepid a soul as one would need to be for such an adventure, but from what I have read, the only real sticking point would be the Darien Gap in southern Panama.
