Help with creature identification!

7 posts in this topic

Hello there members,

I am hoping someone can help me identify this caterpillar-like creature? I found it a handful of times I lived in the eastern Central African Republic, from 2008-2014. It was always on the forest floor, of the rainforest galleries- never out in the savanna woodlands. The locals were terrified of them, and said the hairs caused tissue damage if they got stuck in a person's skin.

I am researching it for a book I am completing.

Thanks for your help!

/Adam

What length, approximately? Did you find them moving around, or always rolled up in a ball?

I saw it moving as well, just like a typical caterpillar movement. It only balled up as a defense. But strangely, as it moved, red fluid pulsed through its veins, and I could clearly see it because the skin is translucent. THey were 6-7cm long- and as you can see in the photo, fairly wide as well.

Thanks!

~ Looking at the colors, it resembled an adolescent male cocktail prawn.
