@samapi - thanks for the kind words. I'm glad you enjoyed it. The night drives have all been taken with a Nikon D500 with a 200-500mm lens, f5.8. 

 

Looking back through my photos almost all are taken at 500m, ISO 12800, f5.8, shutter speed 1/160 - 1/200. Retrospectively, the ISO could have been a bit lower. I didn't use a flash and given the strength of the spotlight I don't think that you'll need one. 

 

I think you probably would be better off with a telephoto zoom of 300+. The grass cover will be up in December and whilst the animals don't appear to be disturbed by the spotlight they are all quite small and kept there distance at 20-50m+ from the vehicle.

I'm very late to the party as I tend to read reports that are about places I might like to visit in the near future so I kept this one for when I'm ready to make some plans. You have certainly given me some extra food for thought though, especially as Cape Town is almost a must do as there is plenty for Claire as well as my obsession with wildlife photography.
