The penultimate afternoon saw more cloud build up and our last day in Mana coincided with the first rains of the season. In a befitting goodbye, the last afternoon was spent surrounded by the Nyakasanga pack of wild dogs as the pups played non-stop. Lightning, thunder and the camp bull visiting us one last time, marked off an end to a wonderful 9 days in Mana.

Final Sketches and a warm nostalgic goodbye to our 2016

I want to conclude this overview of our safaris in 2016 with a simple photo. but very dear to me and @@Anita: the two of us with Michael and Tico in the morning of the departure from our little mobile camp - our temporary home and our base to immerse ourselves in the lives of the local wild dog packs and to get precious insights about what research and conservation on the ground are all about. It is so special as far as we are concerned because it depicts us in the company of great and inspirational people, and it really shows the happiness in our faces - the same happiness that has pervaded all our safaris last year.

post-5680-0-68990200-1490537225_thumb.jpg

One evening as we were bouncing around some diabolical thick sandy track, Michael came out with a sentence that has stuck in my brain ever since:"This is not a manicured safari". Extrapolating from it, I would love to think that all our safari year has not been a "manicured" one - even Tswalu, which may sound counter intuitive.

But really, throughout our travels we have been exposed to such multi-faceted and complex realities and stories - several of them uplifting (like the terrific job performed by African Parks), some of them depressing (like the steep rise in bush meat poaching and human/wildlife conflict) - and the variety of landscapes, wildlife, conservation challenges we have been witnessing has been so amazing and eye-opening that I would consider all these trips as a whole as very much "out of the box" and authentic journeys of discovery - in essence, "not manicured".

For me, sharing those experiences with @@Anita has made it all even more extra-special.

post-5680-0-29040300-1490537282_thumb.jpg

I confess that when we started to post this thread, we both were thinking it would be far shorter than it has turned out to be, that the number of photos would have been fairly limited, just showcasing bits and pieces of our trips. But then, as it often happens, trip reports or the like start to get a life of their own, and become long and winding (and the editing of photos a real chore).

But now Zakouma is beckoning, and I know Michael is going to work us very hard. Hence, some rest is absolutely mandatory....see you later!

"We saw 6 different aardvarks (including one taking a power nap!) and 4 different pangolins during our stay. All our encounters were on foot." I'm sure there was a time when you thought you could only write such a statement in your dreams. What a feat!

Enjoy Zakouma!!

I am sure we will, and we really cannot wait.

It will be my third visit to Zakouma in the space of three years, but I am as excited as the first time (if not more)!

More stunning photos - sort of sad it's come to an end but I'll certainly be returning to this thread to enjoy them again and then there are your travels in Zakouma to look forward to.

Many thanks to you both.

Thanks everyone I cant say I love editing photos for a deadline which is what Paolo made me do a lot of times :-D but in retrospect glad for all those Saturdays and Sundays given up to go through the archives.

@@pault Grace is your middle name, my friend. This report was really put together to keep a kind of memory bank for us- should we not be able to depend on Paolo's exceptional memory powers, atleast we have a back up ;-)

For both of us our safaris are very emotional and we give it all we can now because we know things can quickly change in the future! So no need to be envious- we have all got something, someone else wants! I would love your way of seeing things for example and finding the sunny side even in scrambled egg whites! :P

@Paolo@Anita Please enjoy Zakouma. It looks like I'll be making it there after all next year in February with Douglas MacDonald. I'm sure that it won't be last visit.

Very happy this turned out much longer than you had planned to - magnificent pictures by Anita, and I hope you will treat us with even better stuff (if that is even possible) next year. To a mindblowingly wonderful 2017 for the both of you - I have a feeling it will be.

As a newcomer to Safaritalk I have been following this thread avidly for several weeks and just wanted to express my thanks to you both for sharing your wonderful experiences during 2016 with the wider 'safari' community.

Anita your images are of the highest quality and superbly reflect in detail your wonderful experiences and sightings. They give us all a standard to aim for. The narrative Paolo, would grace any professional publication. It is not only highly informative but also an absorbing read.

Your travels, certainly have encouraged me to consider to travel to areas outside my comfort zone, plans are well advanced to visit Zakouma in early 2018.

Look forward to your 2017 adventures and images. Thank you both again and have a very productive 2018, particularly look forward to an update on Chad.

Really on the brink of departure, but the extremely nice and generous (even flattering, I might say!) words coming from @@johnweir give me the chance to again thank everybody who took the time to follow and comment on our "sketches". Very much appreciated!
