ZIMBABWE WILDLIFE ISSUES

24 posts in this topic

this place keeps on coming up,so I thought it would be a good idea to create a general thread

  • the Zimbabwe conservation task force says that the wildlife department is currently putting together 130 elephants and 50 lions for export to Chinese zoos
  • it is believed that one of the male members of Cecil's pride, game capture is going on in the same reserve
  • there is talk that the runway at vic falls airport is being extended so it can take very large cargo jets, if the trade goes through here as it would get less media attention than Harare

Please see http://us.blastingnews.com/world/2016/09/cecil-the-lion-family-might-be-targeted-for-zimbabwe-export-to-china-zoo-001131027.html

as mentioned before in a previous thread , the zoo which was being built to take some of the previous live elephant sales was appauling, metal bars on concrete slabs in an district with severe air pollution

Be careful with the news the Zimbabwean Conservation task force spreads, repeatedly they've been proven wrong. Like in this case, it is confirmed that none of the members of Cecil's pride have been captured.

this was never a good idea ,it created the impression of favoured treatment

The High Court has ordered Tsholotsho Rural District Council to suspend hunting permits to a company tasked to hunt elephants in Tsholotsho North to fund the construction of a football stadium, the brainchild of local MP Professor Jonathan Moyo.Prof Moyo is also Higher and Tertiary Education, Science and Technology Development Minister. The deal to fund the construction of the facility was negotiated when under fire Zanu-PF political commissar Cde Saviour Kasukuwere was still Minister of Water, Climate and Environment.

Indeed it is a real mess.

Despite the non-stop photo opportunities and happy talk at carefully staged “things are getting better” for the international media, the grim reality remains dismal at best.

The one and only effective weapon against such trade is unannounced independent verification...which is certainly the one step which would never be sanctioned by the authorities here.

Unannounced Independent Verification.

Why does that remain the big No-No?

Zimbabwe to Sell Wildlife to DRC, Gambia NewZimbabwe.com June 8, 2017

http://allafrica.com/stories/201706080170.html

the report does not give a whole lot of details

zim gives drought as the reason for selling

who knows what will happen to the money paid to zim

both the seller and the buyers have high corruption, a poor state of the rule of law and serious wildlife crime

So 3 countries with seriously bad governance are making friends

Most former French countries lost a substantial number of wildlife due to poaching and we will work with these countries so that we all benefit," said Muchinguri-Kashiri.

DRC was Belgian, Gambia was an English colony.

10 elephants poisoned with cyanide in Zimbabwe
Peta Thornycroft, Independent Online

June 13, 2017

See link for photo.

Nine adult elephants and one calf have been poisoned with cyanide around Zimbabwe’s largest wildlife area, the government’s Hwange National Park.

Four of the poisoned elephants died near the south of the Park and their tusks were taken.

The others, including a mother and her calf were found in two areas further north and may have been poisoned last weekend and the poachers had not yet returned to hack out the tusks from the dead animals.

Thank you for bringing this to our attention.

It's very good to have the link, as the article brought out details of the Hwange National Park incident.

Concern was expressed that vultures were also poisoned.

The article mentioned that cyanide was mixed with salt.

Cyanide Poisoning in Hwange Presidential Elephant area (Zimbabwe)

The Zimbabwean

June 20, 2017

See link for photo.

We speak once again to Sharon Pincott, who spent 13 years with the Presidential Elephants of Zimbabwe, following the latest cyanide attacks in Hwange that claimed the lives of at least 10 elephants.

Sharon, how does it feel with this latest cyanide poisoning all being so close to home, and yet so far away from where you are currently based?

Ten more elephants poisoned by poachers in Zimbabwe
Adam Cruise, The Guardian

June 20, 2017

See
link for photo.

Ten elephants, including a mother and her young calf, have been found poisoned in and around Zimbabwe’s premier game reserve, Hwange national park. Six of the animals died in the south of the park last week; some had their tusks hacked off. The others were found outside the northern sector of the park in state forestry land.

Park rangers responded quickly. A bucket of poison was found near the gruesome scene in the north and three arrests were made over the weekend. One of those arrested was found in possession of ivory.
