For all our Mobile Safaris we recommend you stay one night in Maun at the start of the trip. This enables us to make sure your trip is maximised as we will leave Maun at around 10am, enabling us to get to the more remote areas before sundown or even allow you to have an activity before you are required to be back in camp and the park closes. It is possible to start your safari on the day of arrival but as you will leave the Airport around 2pm, this limits your destination on the first day and your activity will be the drive to camp, which in actual fact could be an excellent game drive.

To qualify for the discounted Safaris please contact Martin in the UK via email: martin@ kingfishersafaris.co.uk stating SAFARITALK SPECIAL OFFER in the subject line and mentioning your Safaritalk screen name.

Thanks for bumping this up - very timely for me.  My wife and I are starting to plan for 2017 and we are considering Botswana and this looks like a possible candidate!

Hi Martin,

Could you perhaps give a bit of information on the campsites that are used?

My research seems to indicate that there is rather a big difference between the public camps sites and the boga or hatab campsites?

Thanks in advance!

@martywilddog

Thank you for the message.

We use the BOGA campsites, which are exclusively for local operators to use. The difference bewteen the BOGA/HATAB and the public sites is that the Public sites all have buildings for ablutions and are open to anyone to camp on (not usually operators) and the BOGA/HATAB sites are simple wilderness campsites where the operator has to provide everything and leave in the same way they found it. These campsites are away from the 'Gates', where all the public campsites are and feel very remote and they are exclusive, which means you will be the only group on the site. There may be other sites relatively close by but you can't see them and are unlikely to know that they are even there. The one exception is the Khwai campsites which are owned by the community and regulated by them. Some of these can get quite busy, the Magotho area, but it can be worth staying there as there is some great wildlife. The Khwai community have some campsites exclusively for operators, which we use when available and are more like the BOGA/HATAB sites inside the parks and are more exclusive than the Magotho sites. Having said this some of the Magotho sites are in stunning locations and depending on the time of year you visit (best outside the South African holidays) they are well worth a visit and Pilot, your Guide, loves this area for its abundance of Leopard.

Areas with BOGA sites (this is not exhaustive as there are lots of new sites being added all the time):

CKGR - Deception Valley - there are more new ones in CKGR

Nxai Pan

Moremi - Third Bridge, Xakanaxa, & Khwai

Chobe - Savuti, Ihaha and there may be some in Linyanti now.

These are the ones we generally use but there are other sites for use with Mokoro trips, for example on Chief's Island, however these are all for community users and there are no game drives. There are also many more private campsites springing up but these are not in the main game areas and include Kubu Island in the Makgadikgadi, Tsodilo Hills and more.

There are other activities to get involved with aside from our Mobiles, which include Quad biking and overnighting on the Salt Pans from Planet Baobab. This also includes visiting the habituated Meerkats near Jack's Camp. I have done this trip myself and the sleep-out under the stars on the Pan is truly magnificent.

We also include a Motorboat trip on the Xakanaxa Lagoon, subject to availability and whether you want to visit this area.

We can also organise accommodation at the start and end of the trip if necessary and we DO recommend one night in Maun prior to departure, which means you will get at least one activity on your first day. You can start your trip straight from your arrival aircraft but you will only arrive in camp shortly before the park closes for the night.

I hope this helps.

Here are a few pics:

This is one of the Magotho campsites in Khwai, which is a great spot for Leopard, Wild Dog and i have also seen Cheetah here. It is also frequently visited by the Male Elephants who love the acacia pods:
