The Red-whiskered bulbul is stunning - a really beautiful bird.

As is the Common waxbill - and so well photographed.

Now I got all excited about this one, as I had some extreme close-ups and when I was looking on wikipedia, I thought it was a new species. However, it did look very familiar and it turns out that a striated heron is the same as a green-backed heron :(

However, these are way better shots than from the Kruger, shame they won't "count"

And another duplicate, but again much better photos than KNP - yellow-fronted canary

Yup! Different names for same birds is a real bind. Americans are now trying to tell 'us' that Eurasian Teal is really Green-winged Teal all along.

Nice pictures though.

Are we really going to count an Aylesbury Duck? What next? Rhode Island Red?

A bird's a bird! At least it was in the wild, 6000km away....

Back in May I had a few days off and as it was sunny, so I thought I would go and visit a local RSPB reserve (Fen Drayton lakes) that I have never been to before. It is an artificial lake habitat from gravel extraction, with surrounding farmland. Apart from in our garden and a dreary November afternoon in Minsmere, I have not done any bird identification in the UK, so my IDs are likely to be more patchy than usual!! I was there for a few hours around lunch time and managed to tick off 29 species, including 6 new ones (if they are correct!). So here goes...new ones first. 4/5/16

No sooner than I had arrived, than I heard the characteristic sound of a cuckoo. I have never heard one in the UK, let alone seen one. I had just seen a bird fly across and assumed it was a pigeon, but walked nearer, following the sound and managed to find it in the trees. The photos are not spectacular and are heavily cropped, but this was boding well for my first UK birding trip!!

You never heard a Cuckoo in the UK? Interesting, I would have thought they are everywhere. I hear them a lot here, but have never ever had a "photoreach"-sighting.

Beginner's Luck? I have yet to get a photo of a Cuckoo as good as yours! Well done!!

@@Michael. Cuckoos used to be the sounds of spring in UK but they are becoming rarer for reasons unknown. (And a darn sight harder to find!)

As I was leaving the reserve, a bit of safari experience came in handy. I was at the T-junction for the main road, waiting for a gap in the traffic, when I noticed a car behind me had pulled over and stayed for a while. Being a good game spotter (and car behaviour spotter) I immediately did a U-turn and drove up to the spot where they had left, where I saw two little birds pecking around in the stubble. I had to get the bins back out to see them properly - what cute little birds!

I think this was probably new as well, which makes 7 that were definitely new. I am assuming that the rest of the water birds I am about to post I have seen before, but it may well just have been on TV or in magazines...
