Jip @@Tdgraves.

I was just thinking today of all the birds I see and/or hear on an almost daily basis yet haven't photographed yet!

Absolutely no problem, my friend! Any time, any photo.

Beautiful photos!! Maybe this year also we could start something like "Zvezda's Big Year"?? Is it necessary to ID all birds or is it OK to just post the pictures  ?

With your excellent photos from Marienvale You have made my day in two steps:

1. it will be so easy to ID birds we have photographed there :) !

2. after seeing your excellent images I might just skip the workload and not post anything  ??

@@xelas, in the first year I tried that trick.

I think that bird is still unidentified.

I was waiting for your trip report to get to Marievale but became impatient. Decided I could just post a link to this thread, but have kept some photos out (not species though).

But you do neat to give us some of your excellent narrative! No excuses!

Peter some of these are really spectacular and again I really appreciate learning about some of these new species for me. The yellow crowned bishop is just wow for lack of a better word and I really like the purple swamphen and re knobbed coot among others. Are these South African specials or can I see them elxewhere?

No way will we be able to reproduce your shots but I will try to up our game later this year.

@@dlo, the yellow-crowned bishop is a very entertaining specie to watch, buzzing around back and forth for all the world like big bumble-bees.

There are a number of species of Swamphen (or Gallinule in some places) that look broadly similar, distributed throughout Africa and into southern Europe, and even Australasia apparently have a similar specie (this is all off of photos seen and Wiki, I have never been to any of these places). However they seem to be commonest here in southern Africa. They are quite shy though.

The Red-knobbed Coot is apparently found throughout Africa and into southern Spain, and there are other Coot species in other parts of the world.

Here in SA they are very common, and can be seen on virtually any body of water with a reed-bed.

However all these species (and in fact most of the species photographed at Marievale are to some extent dependent on water or wetlands. And wetlands are not often frequented on Safari because they are ecologically sensitive and difficult to move around in, and they do not support the larger keynote species that most people seem to come to Africa to see.

Thanks @@Treepol

All superb; so good to be able to see such a collection in one place.

I particularly like the close up of the Go Away bird's eye.
