Gamewatchers SAFARITALK Special Safari, Kenya, July and October 2016.

Following several members of Safaritalk expressing an interest in the budget-priced Gamewatchers Adventure Camps, we have agreed with Game Warden to put together 2 departures at further discounted rates for Safaritalk members in July and October 2016.

The first safari starts off in Nairobi on Sunday 10th July 2016 with the first night in Nairobi Tented Camp in Nairobi National Park followed by 3 nights at Selenkay Conservancy, Amboseli on 11,12,13 July and then 3 nights at Ol Kinyei Conservancy, Mara on 14,15,16 July. There will be a second safari starting  in Nairobi on Sunday 9th October 2016 with the 6 nights in the Adventure Camps on 10,11,12,13,14,15 October 2016.

The price for Safaritalk members is US$2100 per person sharing, for the 7 nights / 8 days in Kenya and includes the daily park and conservancy fees, internal flights to Selenkay and Ol Kinyei, the accommodation and meals and game drives. The minimum age is 8 years and for children aged between 8 and 15 there is a 25% discount, with the option to have one child sharing with 2 adults or 2 children in their own tent.

There is space for up to 12 Safaritalk members on each of the two dates with a minimum of 4 persons for the special rate of $2,100 to apply.

This camping safari has been designed to offer the same high quality wildlife safari experience provided by the top-end safari camps, with 4×4 game viewing escorted by top class guides and in exclusive wildlife conservancies away from the tourist minibuses, but at a hugely reduced price by staying in small basic adventure camps, “real camping” instead of the luxury accommodation of the expensive up-market tented lodges. In spite of the budget price, the transport between the camps is by light aircraft to avoid the long drives overland on rough roads and to give more time on safari for activities from the camps.

For those for whom the wildlife safari experience is more important than the accommodation, and who are prepared to sleep in small dome tents in sleeping bags on a mattress on the floor with an element of “roughing it”, this gives an opportunity for an exceptional and exclusive wildlife experience with good quality guiding by our Porini guides but at a fraction of the price.

The Gamewatchers Adventure Camps are sited in private conservancies with a wealth of wildlife: in the Selenkay Conservancy in the Amboseli eco-system and in the Ol Kinyei Conservancy in the Mara. You can go on walks with Maasai guides and take night drives as well as having game drives in the Conservancies and you will also have a full day in Amboseli National Park and the Maasai Mara Reserve.

Click below for a 360 degree visual tour of the camp and facilities:

www.porini.com/wp-content/uploads/virtual-tours/gamewatchers-adventure-camp

All game drives are in four-wheel-drive customised safari vehicles taking a maximum of 6 passengers. Your driver-guide is a wildlife expert and certified by the Kenya Professional Safari Guides Association.

At each safari camp site we have service staff who do all the work associated with camping, like washing up, heating water for showers, doing the cooking and serving the food. An experienced safari cook is at the camp to prepare the daily meals. Food is of the same quality as in a luxury safari camp and is included in the price, (not bought through a ‘kitty’ like some other camping safaris). The camp is hosted by the head safari guide.

Tents are Coleman Sundome tents for 2 persons.  They are 6 ft tall and they are 10ft x 10ft square. Clients bring their own sleeping bag and a towel (or hire these for a small fee) and sleep on comfortable mattresses on the tent floor. Each tent on our adventure safari has its own private bathroom in a cubicle located behind the tent with flush toilet, wash basin and safari shower.

Mineral water is provided daily at camp and on game drives and walks. Drinks other than mineral water are not included in the price but beer, wine and sodas are available at reasonable prices and guests may bring their own drinks if they wish.

Transfers from Nairobi to the camps are by light aircraft from Wilson Airport Nairobi to Selenkay, Mara and back. At the Adventure Camps, all safari transport is in open-sided 4×4 customised safari vehicle.

The itinerary for the SAFARITALK Special Safari combines the first night in Nairobi Tented Camp with six nights at our Adventure Camps in Selenkay Conservancy, Amboseli and in Ol Kinyei Conservancy, Mara and is as follows:

Day 1: Met on arrival at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and transfer to Nairobi Tented Camp. Afternoon game drive and evening sundowner followed by dinner and overnight.

Return to camp in Selenkay Conservancy later in the afternoon after a picnic lunch. Dinner and overnight in the camp at Selenkay.

Day 5: After an early breakfast transfer to the airstrip for the 08.30 am flight back to Wilson Airport (arrives 09.10 am) to connect to the 10.00 am flight to the Mara, arriving at 11.00 am. Upon arrival at the airstrip in the Mara you will be transferred to the Gamewatchers Adventure Camp in Ol Kinyei Conservancy and shown to your tent, before having lunch and relaxing in camp. In the afternoon you will head out on an evening game drive in the conservancy to see some of the wildlife for which the Mara is famous. Return to camp for dinner and overnight.

@JakeGC This looks like a fantastic offer and a great opportunity. I'd be jumping at this if we weren't heading to Tanzania in May and South African in Sept. Hopefully it will be such a smashing success that you will do it again!

Wow, $2,100 including r/t air and conservancy fees for seven days is quite a good deal. I would be all over this but I have family obligations.

Urgent request to all Safaritalkers - How can I get my wife to let me skip a wedding or week with the in-laws and avoid sleeping on the sofa for a year.

Eagerly awaiting any suggestions.

@Kitsafari
Glad you think it's a great safari and we would be glad to welcome you to our camps and the Conservancies. We will be offering a special of $2300 to Safaritalk members again for Jan to March 2017 and July to October 2017 for the same itinerary.
By the way, this may be of interest: a link to background information on the development of the conservancy concept which we have been involved in over the last 20 years: expanding the area of protected habitat for wildlife beyond the state-owned parks & reserves by leasing land from local communities to be set aside for wildlife with the costs paid for from the  income from low-impact small-scale tourism to our safari camps:

@Seniortraveller
For 2017, the special rate of $2300 for the 7 night/8 day safari will apply to any departures in January to March 2017 and in July to October 2017. The minimum number is 2 persons and you can choose any date. If there are 4,5 or 6 Safaritalk members booked on the same date then they will be allocated together in the same safari vehicle.

I have been asked if we can vary the nights in Nairobi to tie in with flight arrivals and the answer is yes, we can - we are very flexible!
Robyn (robyn@gamewatchers.com) will be happy to assist in adding or deleting the Nairobi accommodation and to adjust the overall cost accordingly if you let her know your preference.

@RichB
Thanks for your interest in our Special Offer.
The price of $2100 is per person sharing tent with game drives in a 6-seater open-sided game drive vehicle with the other guests at camp and includes the internal flights Nairobi-Selenkay-Nairobi-Mara-Nairobi.
Yes, we can offer a price for a single person with sole occupancy at Nairobi Tented Camp, in the Adventure Camps and the day room at Eka Hotel at a supplement of $400, so the cost for a single is $2500 with shared game drives with the other guests.

Here is a link to a 360degree visual tour of the camp in Ol Kinyei Conservancy:
http://www.porini.co...adventure-camp/

I must stress that the camp accommodation is basic, as you can see on the  visual tour - small dome tents, sleeping bag and mattress on the floor but each tent has its own cubicle with flush lavatory and safari shower. For those who don't mind an element of "roughing it" and "real camping" with a small number of like-minded companions and with great game viewing in open-sided 4x4 with local KPSGA-qualified Maasai guides whose family owns land in the conservancies and are keen to show you the wildlife away from the tourist crowds then it's great value!

Great offer, @JakeGC! This was actually my very first African safari - in August, 2013. We had extended our stay at the Ol Kinyei with one night and after that spent 3 nights in central Mara at a different camp, but still the backbone of the trip was this Gamewatchers offer. Both adventure camps, the staff and the guides were fabulous! Here is my trip report

Many thanks for highlighting the Trip Report on the Gamewatchers Adventure Camps. Some great pictures! I specially like the Lesser Kudu.

I am glad you enjoyed the conservancies, especially the low-density form of tourism. This has been something of a mission for us at Gamewatchers as we have expanded the area of protected habitat for wildlife by leasing over 1,000 individual parcels of land to create over 100,000 acres of protected habitat in Ol Kinyei - Naboisho - Olare Motorogi Conservancies added alongside the Reserve. This is now the biggest area of unsettled land outside the Reserve in the Mara eco-system and it has a growing wildlife population, especially lions. see map below with the 100,000 acres ringed in red:
Attached File  100,000 acres Mara.jpg   247.89KB   0 downloads
In case of interest, here is a link to a list of all the camps which are located in the 3 Conservancies with which we are involved and also Mara North Conservancy. These are the camps that pay for the leases and management costs of the conservancies and the only ones with the right to drive within the conservancy in which they are located: click on link below:
