@madaboutcheetah  It's in the pdf that amybatt linked to immediately before my post ... Mara Cheetah project newsletter

I thought what would make you happy is the sheer number of cheetahs around at the moment though. There are only a few entries in the newsletter but most of them are referring to 3-5 cheetahs!!!

Dear all,

Does anyone know if there is a legal "off road permit" for the Mara?

Thanks
Hari

@madaboutcheetah - apparently there used to be, but according to Google searches: in 2015 Narok County Council was debating ending the practice. But I am not sure what was decided. I get some Google hits on some camps' websites mentioning the $200 off-road fee in the reserve but I am not sure if that is leftover material not updated since May/June 2015.

Reason I ask ..... I'm in the Mara right now and got hustled by "cheetah forever" along with their Ranger ..... off-road permit to sit with malaika and her cubs for 10K Kenyan shillings which is roughly USD100? Seriously - it sounded like they were hustling me .... left the scene and the camp I'm staying at didn't want anything to do with any of that ..... I'm told it might "appear legit " but it's not something to be encouraged.

So much for "cheetah forever" .....

Ouch! And how were you supposed to pay them? Direct, in cash?

i find that unacceptable. their reason for being was to protect cheetahs, not make money out of them. I had more to say, but with great restraint, I deleted the remarks.

I suppose that there would be somebody to ask about the legitimacy of this but don't know who. Who provides these 'rangers'. Are the seconded to Cheetah Forever from the legitimate local Ranger organisation or are the simply named as rangers by Cheetah Forever?

@wildog - I didn't bother checking any further - I was told by the camp manager that it's illegitimate and I did not do anything further as it might tarnish their reputation..... I stuck to the conservancy after that episode. I was however hustled by both the driver of "forever cheetah" and the accompanying ranger who was in uniform. If they are baby sitting the cubs - how does handing out "off road" permits for 100$ help? Assuming my math is correct ie., 10k shilling

Anyways, I'm at ODL and have amazing cheetah brothers ala Botswana style ...... it's an amazing cheetah tracking experience here!

@Kitsafari - I think those 5 are mostly in Naboisho. I had no access from OMC.

@madaboutcheetah Very late to this but I do know that several people staying at the same camp as me in Oct' 2016 paid 'Cheetah Forever' so that they could go off road to get images and some quiet time with the cats. When they told me I just raised my eyebrows... As usual a few start paying and it becomes the expected norm.

It does make you wonder whether the French group who run Cheetah Forever are aware of this practice and endorse it..... or not. @ Geoff were the camp managers aware of this? it sounds from your post that the transactions were pretty open.

The whole reasoning for their operation is to baby sit the Cubs and to protect them from humans, Lions, Hyena and Leopard and they've been vocal about it -

So, to keep them off human disturbances (they are there to police vehicles and their strict guidelines) - how does it then help to issue these off-road permits?  And that too for $100???? I mean there will be a zillion vehicles who are willing to pay that price ...... But, they all add up for the recipient doesn't it????

In brief, there is a reason they are not allowed into the Conservancies!!!!! That's the bottom line!
