Safaritalk has been nominated for the category of Best Travel Blog / Journalist in this year's SATOA's Travel Awards, as per the communication below.

I've always been outspoken about not voting for such awards and that nominees should win based upon individual merit and not manipulation of social media/friends lists, and I'm sure that the other nominees indeed are well merited and fully deserving of their nomination. However, it's great for ST to gain recognition in the travel industry in this manner and totally reflects your contributions to the site and magazine for which I thank you.
I don't know if I can personally go not being based in the UK and so if any UK based Safaritalkers would like to represent us on my behalf, please do let me know.
Have a read of the below message and let me know your thoughts, thanks, Matt.

Dear Matthew,

Congratulations, *SafariTalk* has been nominated by one or more of our SATOA members for the below category:

- *Best Travel Blog / Journalist*

SATOA in conjunction with our sponsors, One & Only, are delighted to announce the annual SATOA Travel Awards which will be held in London on 17th September 2015. These awards are designed to reward companies and/or individuals for the quality of their products and/or their valuable input in the destinations promoted by SATOA (Africa and Indian Ocean). If you are not very familiar with SATOA, please visit our website www.satoa.com – we are a membership non-profit organisation formed in 1982 promoting travel to Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Voting is now on-going and will be closing at midnight the 10th of September 2015. We would therefore like to invite you to communicate your nomination to your industry colleagues and friends asking them to vote for you, please also feel free to submit your own votes. To vote, please go to www.satoa.com/awards-menu and click on ‘Click here to vote’. The winners (one per category) will be announced and awarded at our event in London on 17 September. The winners will be the companies / individuals who receive the most votes (anyone from the travel industry is welcome to vote and also welcome to attend the event).

The categories for the award are:

Best UK / Ireland Tour Operator - selling to trade

Best UK / Ireland Tour Operator - direct sell

Best retail agent

Best property 20 rooms or less

Best property 20 rooms or more

Best Safari

Best Tourist Board

Best CSR programme (to be adjudicated by the SATOA Committee)

Best Travel Anecdote (to be adjudicated by the SATOA Committee)

Please also include @SATOA <http://www.twitter.com/satoa> when tweeting for votes so that we may in turn re-tweet on your behalf.

The SATOA Travel Awards event will be held in London on 17 September 2015 and we would therefore like to invite you to purchase your tickets to attend the event – and hopefully collect your award if you get the most votes. To book your ticket(s), please go to www.satoa.com click on awards.

Details of the event below:

Where: Bbar - 43 Buckingham Palace Road, London, SW1W 0PP
When: 17 September 2015 from 19:00
How much: £35 per person

The evening will be a great opportunity to network with industry colleagues and friends, all of whom promote travel to Africa and the Indian Ocean.

Please pass this on to colleagues and industry friends asking them to vote as well as register to join us at this great event!

Should you have any questions, please let me know.

Kind regards,

Thoroughly deserved Matt.

Like you I am highly suspicious of "awards", particularly those type of 'best safari awards' where you stump up a fat fee and then become a 'nominee'.... or even win!

In this case however I know it is well deserved, so I have voted with my feet (well, mouse).

Congratulations! A well deserved nomination and recognition for all your hard work.

I see they also have a Best Travel Anecdote award. Surely a STer also has to win this one :)

@@Game Warden - Well done Matt, even more impressive because ST is a not-for-profit operation.

Does this mean we all get to share a huge prize fund and can afford an extra holiday next year? ;)

Seriously though, well done and well deserved for all the hard work you (and the mods) put in here. The forum has been an amazing source of help and guidance in the planning of my first safari, thank you.

Hardy congratulations, Matt. Job well done! Who is the competition? If their blogs are anywhere near your quality, yet for other destinations, I would be most interested in reading.

Here is my reply to the notice of nomination:

I'd like to thank you for the below email and notification of www.safaritalk.net 's nomination for Best Travel Blog / Journalist in this year's SATOA's travel awards. I have previously attended SATOA evenings when I have been at WTM London and have enjoyed the networking and camaraderie very much.

Unfortunately, as I am not based in the UK I won't be able to attend due to costs - as you may know I self founded, fund and run www.safaritalk.net from home without financial recompense nor safari industry incentives, I am not linked to or part of any organisation, charity or company. As well as the website, I also publish a quarterly magazine, available free via download for mobile devices, or through the net, further details can be found here:

http://safaritalk.net/forum/261-the-safaritalk-magazine/

Currently putting together issue 4 as we speak.

Safaritalk brings together people from around the world who are passionate about Africa, its people and wildlife, from normal tourists to photographers, conservationists, lodge and camp owners/managers, guides and so on. There are many who before joining Safaritalk never knew each other but now travel to Africa together.

I see this nomination as recognition from the travel industry for the contributions made to www.safaritalk.net by its members: without them, Safaritalk would be an empty place. I believe every nomination should be made on merit, and am sure that each nominee is well justified: I'd like to say thank you to those SATOA members who did nominate Safaritalk and wish everyone luck in the awards.

I look forward to reading more about the evening and seeing the photos via social media and the SATOA website.

In the meantime, my best regards,

Matthew Wilkinson - www.safaritalk.net Talking Safaris and African Wildlife Conservation since 2006. Passionate about Africa.
