Can't hurt to have Prince Harry on the right side of this war.

"the minister says that figures are no longer being released regularly as that supports poachers"

How terrible the evidence shows how easy it is to poach.

Thanks for the posts.  Though they are awful

The security would have to be extra special good  on this occasion to avoid  anything happening  with prince harry ,just the sort of publicity you don't need

I emailed an environmental journalist who assumes that the source is well placed  and regards the absence of regular official figures as a bad way to start speculation

there is an interesting news 24 article about the insufficient legal response

in the words of a prosecutor the suspects are treated like shoplifters

there is no specific poaching offence so the approach is to go for high penalties on trespassing and firearms offences

see  http://www.news24.co...-rhino-20150810

sorry  the link does not work

so go to http://www.news.24/SouthAfrica

go to search box

put in rhinos

the report is call  poachers' court reveals struggle to save SA rhino  it is dated  10 AUG

so there is a new media release from the minister

please see  http://www.environment.gov.za     sorry  cut and paste links no longer work for me

it gives  no figures at all  on the  number of  deaths

this year to date there have been 1617 poaching activities in kruger, there are about 3 per day

it mentions  measures being taken

there is also a powerpoint  presentation  slides attachment

well at least the number of incursuions per day are coming down

according to a graph about 2 rhinos were poached per day during jan  ,feb and march 2015

there are about 11.000 rhinos in kruger

there is a map which gives the approximate location of Kruger rangers,  that really is the sort of information which should not be published

there is no mention of anything in the release or presentation  of anything outside kruger national park

a whole lot of what is now on the newspage of the envir dept has the minister in an active role, kind of like her diary

so they don't give the public important information to bring them along with what has to be done, but then turn the site over for the ministers  political advancement

NEWS 24 REPORTS

1  year to date 749 deaths nation wide  with 544 from kruger, this looks like selective briefing  without a press release

2 oct 2014  2  Mozambique poachers caught in kruger   around lower sabie   given 11 years jail each from firearms, ammunition and trespassing charges.  good sentence, but it does not look good not to have a specific offence for poaching

So the National environmental management act  is to be amended , over things like envasive species control , mining approvals and banning some activities in marine reserves.

it is patently obvious that a specific wildlife poaching offence is needed, the law is being changed, but not this

so poachers and dealers will continue to be charges with trespass , illegal possession of firearms etc

overlooking this leads me to ask questions why no specific offence ?

why is this charge not being made ?

it leads me to thing not much of the sth African govt approach to this vital issue

minister announces that there will be another rhino poaching update

30 nov  no press release  on the web site , nothing in the press

what happened ? perhaps she got too busy packing  for her trip  the Paris climate talks

well where are the priorities

  • don't make announcements you can't keep
  • a senior parks or police official could have done the announcement  for her

as it stands at the moment the department's  press releases section on the web sit has been turned into a fan page for the minister and deputy minister

From what you read, was there any indication as to what sort of update it might be?

In other words, does it concern an impending arrest? An anti-poaching technological breakthrough? New deadlines or quotas?

they have happened before

  • talk about issues ,.trends, challenges and approaches
  • followed by stats table  poaching and arrests  with good regional breakdown
  • the most recent one was cagey,  the poaching and arrest figures with a national total and the Kruger  area figures only were buried in a paragraph about half way through a multi page document, to find things out you have to carefully read ever word

well they used  to report figures ever month with kruger, provincial  and national totals, I would not be the only one to think that is honest and the best way to do things

so the minister declares that being open in giving vital information to poachers

link tested and works

NORTH KOREAN DIPLOMAT EXPELLED FROM SA FOR RHINO  HORN TRAFFICKING

http://www.allafrica...1512231138.html

on 3 may a car with north Koran diplomatic number plates  for the Pretoria embassy  was found in Maputo , the capital of Mozambique  with 4 1/2 of rhino horn and USD 99,300 in cash

the sth African government   gave  the embassy a 30 day deadline  for senior official Pak Chol  jun  to leave the country

he left quietly on 11 December

the Sth Korean embassy reports that the north Korean embassy does this please see (UPI report called ILLEGAL RHINO HORNS FOUND ON N KPREANS ARRWESTED IN MOZANBIQUE)

since cars are not often checked they abuse this situation.

I can't see why diplomats are allowed to get away with this like this , diplomatic privelleges were not intended to be abuse permits

north Korean embassy staff have been previously linked to

  • major illegal ivory trade in the late 1980's
  • ivory and rhino horn trade out of Zimbabwe in the 1980's

I am totally disgusted

One more weapon for the poachers to use:  diplomatic immunity.

the Vietnamese embassy has previously come to the notice of the south African police over rhino horn but nothing was done due to diplomatic immunity

~ @COSMIC RHINO

Certain nations distort the nature of diplomatic immunity as a fig leaf to cover their own dirty trafficking in wildlife parts.

Ugly, ugly, ugly...yet unlikely to slow down due to their perception that they're able to “get away with it” without any consequences.

Future generations will look back at this, asking why more wasn't done to put a stop to such gross misbehavior.

Neither the Vietnamese Embassy nor the North Korean can can continue to get away with such criminal behavior,it simply can't be tolerated.
