If those camera trap images were made around your home, you live in a lovely setting.

I like the jay, a species I've seen in field guides but not in person.

Safaritalk teaches every time I visit. I had no idea that a woodpecker might visit a feeder.

Your Big Year 2015 include's Steller's jay in Wawona? Terrific! I haven't seen one in decades, so enjoyed your images.

The third long-tailed tit photo is delightful!

The sharpness, focus and separation of the subjects from the background is so well-done.

The shutter was pushed at an ideal moment, one bird in air.

Thank you for adding the assortment of backyard birds.

Who'd even have supposed that a green wood-hoopoe would have any interest in peanuts?

It's a terrific capture, with iridescent dark plumage, scarlet bill and sunlit peanuts all so clearly visible.

I appreciate your end-of-the-year additions to your 2015 big-ish year thread.

Just scouring through the most recent trip photos, trying to find any birds that I had missed and I found this...

Mashatu, 9/9/15

Canon 7D 100-400 ISO 500, f 7.1, 1/1250

Purple roller

However, I cannot find the common waxbills which we saw (new) in Welgevonden. Small, fast birds at a distance, I assume that they got deleted due to focus issues :(

So the total seen (not all photographed) for our September trip was:

Tswalu (4 days) 43 species, 11 new to us

Mashatu (5 days) 97 species, 17 new to us

Welgevonden (3 days) 56 species, 14 new to us

Our friends' lodge 7 new to us (didn't count the others)

So, overall, 49 new species out of 166 seen in 15 days

Not bad, for non-bird-watchers ;)

I'm fairly certain that I seldom have observed that many avian species in a single safari, whether familiar or not.

Your achievement both inspires and amazes.

Your Mashatu experience is simply over-the-top, with such a bounty of species.

Your September trip result substantially raises the bar for what's possible during a safari, at least in my estimation.

What's especially nice is that you've posted a series of excellent images here, as a set, for those of us hoping to be more observant during safaris to emulate.

With Many Thanks,

Tom K.

  • 1 month later...

So, by my reckoning that is:

UK 16

USA 17

Africa 167

A grand total of 200 captured on camera and only a few that got away.....

So it should have been entitled Tdgraves bigger year, as it was more successful than 2014!
