Whoooping Cranes in Wisconsin

This is North America's tallest bird. During the past two years, five of the approximately one hundred Whooping Cranes in the Eastern United States population have been illegally shot and killed. The cost of raising and introducing to the wild one Whooping Crane can be as much as $100,000 and then the judge fined the shooters $1 and $500 court costs.

 

 

 

 

 

I do think this crane is imprinted on Sandhill Cranes. Unless he changes his ways, he probably is not going to help the population increase. It could be a she, of course.

Those penalties are sickening.

One has a chance to see Whooping Cranes at both the Horicon National Wildlife Refuge and the Necedah National Wildlife Refuge. This crane has been coming to the Horicon at least three years. Every time we have seen him, he has been chasing Sandhill Cranes around.
