Tales from Bharatpur

Continuing my journey from Bandhavgarh, I arrived in Bharatpur. This was despite misgivings of many people (not the right season, too early for the ducks, 5 days are too many in the park etc.). This was a park I had decided that I will explore at leisure. After all that was what my trip was all about. As I am sharing this report on a couple of forums, I have posted it on the blog (saves me the pain of duplicating the effort).

You can read the first part of Baharatpur trip at: http://wildwildindia.com/?p=64

@@xnegvx thanks for the fabulous photos from Bharatpur, both the birds and the scenery.

What is the optimal length of a visit to Bharatpur would you say, I'm thinking late February? Is 2 nights and 4 trips into the park enough?

In my opinion, 2-3 nights is the optimal time for most visitors to cover the park. For 2 nights in the park, you will be able to see most of the park. With one extra night, you can make an excursion to Chambal river if interested in specific species.

While I had not included excursions to nearby places this time, I am planning to do that in my next visit. The places of interest to wildlife enthusiast are Bund buretha (a water body nearby for more birds) and Chambal river. Chambal river is specially important as it has Gharials and Indian skimmers which are difficult to find else where. Trip to Chambal can take a full day as its a 2 hrs drive one way and then a boat ride.

Cheers

Beautiful Gallinule, if I am correct. This is a bird paradise from the photos on your blog. Combined with Chambal, what a nice 3 night stay.

@@Atravelynn : you got me stumped with Gallinule, but yes you are right. I have known this bird as Purple Swamphen :) (much easier for me to remember). I agree that Chambal would be a great add on for anyone spending a few days in Bharatpur. Specially for Skimmers and Ghadiyals.
