Female Ardeotis kori

Photographed at 9:11 am on 30 April, 2014 in Samburu National Reserve, Kenya with an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 400, 1/6400 sec., f/4, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

We'd begun a morning game drive when this young female Ardeotis kori, Kori Bustard, was spotted walking beside the track.

The milk chocolate tones of her plumage pleased my eye, as did her elegant carriage.

Eupodotis melanogaster in Grass

Photographed at 3:43 pm on 7 February, 2014 in Masai Mara National Reserve, Kenya, using an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 100, 1/800 sec., f/2.8, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

Bustards have a knack for appearing when least expected, often in the midst of quiet sections of game drives when little else is occurring.

That was the case with this Eupodotis melanogaster, Black-bellied Bustard, which was stalking among the grass stalks with the characteristic bustard jerking gait.
