Elands in Meru are surpricingly agile, even though it is the slowest antelope it was faster than both Zebras.

Eland in Wildflowers

~ Photographed on 28 July, 2015 at 5:09 pm in Nairobi National Park, Kenya, with an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 800, f/5.6, 1/200 sec., 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

*******************************************************************************************************

During the game drives in Nairobi National Park with Emakoko guide @@Peter Muigai., we sighted elands every hour, sometimes solitary, other times in small herds.

They weren't especially shy, remaining where they were despite our presence. They tended to look up, watch for awhile, then resume their grazing, having satisfied their vigilance instincts.

This particular eland was standing in wildflowers at the edge of the track. I'd never been so near to an eland, expecting a prompt departure, yet it stood in one place while we were there.

Sinuous Eland

Photographed on 4 February, 2016 at 5:57 pm in Olare Motorogi Conservancy, Masai Mara, Kenya, with an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 200, f/2.8, 1/640 sec., 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

~ Our target was an extended family of lions with wee cubs, nestled in a remote hollow atop a stony slope. Driving upward at a stately pace, this male eland was spotted beside our route.

His coterie of flies seemed to be giving him as much annoyance as ours were to us. He repeatedly rubbed a tree branch where the flies were thickest, temporarily making them refugees to his nether parts.

Tswalu, Kalahari in August 2013

The group ran across the track in front of us before moving on rapidly, out of sight.

Who Doesn't Belong?

Taken on 30 September, 2014 at 12:32 am outside of the Meru National Park Rhino Sanctuary, Kenya, using an EOS 1D X camera with an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens

ISO 100, f/2.8, 1/2000 sec., 400mm handheld Manual shooting mode in a safari van guided by @@Anthony Gitau of Bigmac Africa Safaris.

~ This remains one of my most memorable eland sightings as it was so unexpected. It was midday with warm heat, hence few mammals or birds.

Driving outside the perimeter fence of the Rhino Sanctuary we encountered a small group of eland, with a gazelle out front. They were in no hurry, making possible an extended sighting.

~ Rounding a deep curve, several eland were grazing near the track, white wildflowers blooming near them.

When stopping to observe and photograph the eland we heard but were unable to spot nearby songbirds.
