Welcome @Craig Reid and thanks for coming to Safaritalk. No doubt you have seen @Safaridude's excellent reportage here?

I look forward to hearing more about the park and perhaps we can schedule an interview about your work to be included here?

Let's get an avatar image sorted for you...

I'd be very interested to hear from Dr. Ralf Mullers and yourself about the instances of Shoebill poaching whereby the chicks are stolen from nests to satisfy demand from the illicit exotic pet trade. When one thinks of poaching, thoughts turn to ivory, rhino horn, bushmeat etc and never something like this. How bad is is and what can be done to lessen the impact?

When we took over management of the area the activity of stealing shoebill chicks from nests was rife. We have put in controls on the law enforcement side and also set up a community based nest protection program which is looking very good in terms of chicks fledging. It is in it's early stages so we will build on the small successes and tweak the problem areas. I would be happy to do an interview on our work, how would that work? Questionaire style probably best......

Thanks for curtailing the shoebill chick nest robbers.  Hope to read more on the forum from you about  wonders of Bangweulu.
