First time I saw a white tailed mongoose was a few days ago. They are extraordinary - kind of half fox.

BTW - who knows the collective name for Mongoose? - You know Pride of lions ..... a (what) of Mongoose?

"Pack" or "Band" of mongoose according to this:

http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/Appendix:Glossary_of_collective_nouns_by_subject

Not very creative, though. "Business" or - even better - "mongaggle", according to

http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_is_the_Collective_noun_for_mongoose

definitely sounds more interesting. B)

post-49296-0-72695200-1427827858_thumb.jpg

Photographed in Samburu National Reserve, Kenya, on 27 January, 2015, at 8:07 am with an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super telephoto lens.

ISO 320, 1/2500 sec., f/2.8, 400mm, handheld Manual exposure.

~ We'd driven for about 10 minutes on our rambling journey towards the Ewaso Nyiro river when about 20 Helogale parvula, Dwarf Mongoose, ran across the track to a large termite mound.

Samburu termite mounds tend toward the grandiose and this particular example maintained the tradition.

We laughed as holes would suddenly have two claws and a face. This particular mongoose stepped out, glanced at us, but seemed far more concerned about the hornbills in the area.

In each of three visits to Samburu I've had fine opportunities to observe and photograph Helogale parvula at fairly close range, sometimes in what were surely fraught situations for them.

I like your Large Grey Mongoose photograph.

It's a species I've never observed, so your image is especially appreciated.

Thank you for thoughtfully providing the shooting information, as I was curious how it was photographed.

Just a correction to the shooting info for the Large Grey Mongoose pic. Shutter was at 1/1250 sec and I was using DX mode on the D810 which meant that the lens setting was the equivalent of 600mm.

@wulff

Nice photo of a white-tailed mongoose these animals are very common in Zakouma NP in Chad but interestingly almost all of the animals I saw on my last trip there were black ones evidently this melanistic form seems to dominate in Central Africa from recollection I only saw one that had the proper white-tipped tail seen in the photo above. The following animal was typical of the white-tailed mongooses in Zakouma.

@@inyathi So how are they white-tailed mongooses if they don't have a white tail? :D

Sorry for the question... here is a serious-ish one. Very interesting that they are all melanistic- but they are very dark anyway so how did folks determine, in the dark, that they are actually melanistic as opposed to just a bit darker than usual and missing the white tail tips?

Fantastic thread. Can't imagine how I have missed it until now.

A second look at the ring-tailed mongoose images from Madagascar was worthwhile.

The rich colors in the second photo are eye-pleasing.

I've never seen such an animal, not even in books.

Truly lovely.

Thank you for posting it!

White-tailed Mongoose with Resting Impala

Photographed at 8:02 pm on 20 January, 2016 at Leopard Hills Private Game Reserve, Sabi Sands, South Africa, using an EOS 1D X camera and an EF 400mm f/2.8L IS II super-telephoto lens.

ISO 25,600, 1/160 sec., f/4, 400mm focal length, handheld Manual exposure.

*****************************************************************************************************

~ On the drive back to the lodge the tracker continuously played a specialized night spotlight over the darkened terrain through which we passed. Chameleons and hares would occasionally be seen.

We saw three white-tailed mongoose running through a sizable herd of impala, resting on the grass. The mongoose were active without being frenetic, hence this night image was possible.

@@davidedric I think that what you have shown as a Yellow Mongoose is in fact a Slender Mongoose.

The Yellow Mongoose has a black nose and darker eyes.
