Highlights

The Moremi Game Reserve encompasses large parts of the famous Okavango Delta and is known for its seasonally flooded areas. We use several areas in this vast National Park that we believe, based on 40 years of experience, will give our clients the best chances of seeing Africa’s famous wildlife.

Santawani area – in the south of the Okavango this area is currently one of the best places in Africa to see African Wild Dog. There are also good chances to see Lion, Leopard and Cheetah.

Khwai River area – this fantastic area is superb for all year round game viewing but particularly good for Leopard, with several known resident females. This is also a great area to see African Wild Dogs and Cheetah.

Accommodation

We use 3x3m Bow Tents as standard, with an en-suite shower and bush toilet area. Although small from the outside these tents are remarkably spacious inside with more than enough room for the two beds and more.

Service

At Kingfisher Expeditions we pride ourselves on our outstanding service from start to finish. Unlike our competitors all our expeditions are fully serviced leaving you free to just enjoy yourself and the wildlife as we go that extra mile to make your stay in Botswana go well beyond expectations.

Day 1

Charles will pick you up from your accommodation or from your arrival flight and depart Maun for your first campsite to arrive before sunset. On the way you have a good chance of seeing wildlife including Elephant, Impala, Warthog and more.

Day 2

An early morning wake-up call will be followed by a light breakfast of toast and cereal. As soon as you are ready you will head out on your first game drive around this amazing area where the abundance of game is astonishing. Arriving back in camp some hours later, the time depending on what you’ve seen. After Lunch you will have a siesta and head back out after tea in mid-afternoon. Returning to camp sometime after dark you will have Dinner and enjoy the campfire and perhaps a few stories.

Day 3

You will be woken again early in the morning for a light breakfast before your morning activity and return for lunch some hours later. After Lunch you can relax and enjoy a siesta until tea. After tea you will head out on your afternoon activity with the possibility of a night drive after dinner.

Day 4

Your early morning wake-up call will now be familiar and after your morning activity you will have lunch and then head on to your next destination in Khwai. The drive between areas is about 2 hours and when you arrive your camp will be set-up. Once you are settled in your new camp, you will have some tea and head out on your afternoon Game Drive, returning to camp for Dinner.

Day 5

You will be woken again early in the morning for a light breakfast before your morning activity and return for lunch some hours later. Here it may be possible, at the discretion of the guide with safety in mind, to do a walking safari. After Lunch you can relax and enjoy a siesta until tea. After tea you will head out on your afternoon activity with the possibility of a night drive after dinner

Day 6

You will be woken again early in the morning for a light breakfast before your morning activity and return for lunch some hours later and it may be possible to do a dug-out canoe safari here, depending on water levels. After Lunch you can relax and enjoy a siesta until tea. After tea you will head out on your afternoon activity with the possibility of a night drive after dinner.

Day 7

After your early breakfast will be followed by a slow game drive out of the area and then you will head back to Maun to arrive in time for your onward connections.

The Moremi Game Reserve and Khwai River

The Okavango Delta is where the Okavango River spreads out to form the largest inland River Delta in the world. Here very large herds of Game come to enjoy the seasonal flood and permanent lakes and rivers in a bid to escape the vast areas of the Kalahari Desert that dominate Botswana. Enormous herds of Elephant, Buffalo and Antelope congregate during the Southern Hemisphere winter for the seasonal bounty and are followed by the iconic Predators of the African bush. This is a water wonderland that can be enjoyed in its heart by Dugout canoes as you silently glide along the waterways viewing the game from a unique position as the traditional ‘Poler’ slowly guides you through the channels. Here you can see a myriad of Birdlife and river dwelling animals such as the Sitatunga antelope, Hippo and the ever present, but elusive, Crocodile. On the dry floodplains you can enjoy a Safari in a specially modified 4×4 vehicle that will enable you to get up close to many of the Plains animals that inhabit these areas giving fantastic photographic opportunities or to just enjoy the behaviour of the wildlife with the expert knowledge of your Guide.

Day 4

Your early morning wake-up call will now be familiar and after your morning activity you will have lunch and then head on to your next destination in the Moremi Game Reserve.

Nxai Pan National Park and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park

South of the Okavango you can find the rarely visited Nxai Pan and Makgadikgadi Pans National Parks. These are part of an ancient lake that occupied the central area of Botswana that has dried thousands of years ago to form large Salt Pans that in heavy rainy seasons becomes a haven for Birdlife and other Desert dwelling animals. Here you can see large herds of Oryx, Springbok, Ostriches with the elusive Brown Hyena and Bat Eared Fox. This Desert environment provides a stark contrast to the lush waterways of the Okavango and is a fascinating place to visit. The daily struggle of the wildlife to survive in such a parched landscape gives you an insight into the ecology of marginal land and the constant search for the sparse water supplies. These amazing Pans offer the opportunity to discover the truly wild and remote feeling that Botswana is famous for.

Your Guide

Tumelo Charles Known simply as ‘Charles’, Tumelo has been working for and running his own ‘mobile safari’ business from Maun for the last ten years. He has spent time taking his foreign clients all over Northern Botswana to some of the most remote parts of his beautiful country and seeing the amazing wildlife that inhabits these areas.

Highlights

The Moremi Game Reserve encompasses large parts of the famous Okavango Delta and is known for its seasonally flooded areas. We use several areas in this vast National Park that we believe, based on 40 years of experience, will give our clients the best chances of seeing Africa’s famous wildlife.

Xakanaxa area – in the north of the Moremi Game Reserve this area is currently one of the best places in Africa to a large abundance of wildlife. There are good chances to see Lion, Leopard, Elephant and many more.

Our next Mobile Expedition departs Maun on the 7th October. This Safari visits the Khwai River and Moremi Game Reserve area (North Gate) but focusses mainly on the private concession where we will conduct Game Drives and walking safaris. Dependent on water levels in the side channels there may also be an opportunity for Mokoro trips. The second destination is the Xakanaxa area which is great for Leopard. Due to being inside the National Park here we will only be able to offer Game Drives.

The third destination is Savute in Chobe National Park where only Game Drives are available and there have been great sightings of Lion in this area throughout the season.

Our next Mobile Expedition departs Maun on the 14th October. This Safari visits the Khwai River, Moremi Game Reserve and the Savute area of Chobe National Park. Dependent on water levels in the side channels there may also be an opportunity for Mokoro trips in the Khwai area where we will also conduct walking safaris.

The first destination is the Santawani area of the Moremi Game reserve including a private concession and the South Gate of the National Park. This area is great for Wild Dogs and Leopard which thrive due to a reduced number of Lions. The second area is the Khwai River which is infamous for it's high levels of Predator activity including Wild Dogs, Lion, Leopard and even Cheetah. The third area is Savute which is well known for its Lion activities and the fact that they like to hunt Elephant.

Pilot Manga is not only our Guide but he is also one of the owners of Kingfisher Expeditions along with his Nephew, Tumelo Charles and myself.

Here is a little more about Pilot:

Throughout your trip you will be accompanied by Naturalist and Guide, Pilatwe Manga.

Known throughout Botswana as ‘Pilot’ due to the similarity in his name to Pilate (as in the biblical Pontius Pilate) you will be shown this beautiful country by someone who is a born and bred ‘Motswana’ (the name given to citizens of Botswana) and is a genuine local.

Pilot was born in a small village, Shorobe, on the edge of the Okavango Delta in Botswana. He spent his early life in the bush and on a remote cattle post attending Shorobe Primary School. Shopping trips with his parents would entail travel to Maun by Mokoro (a traditional dug-out canoe). Pilot could not attend high school, due to the death of his Father, leaving Pilot to look after the family.

His upbringing in the Okavango Delta led him to working with the founder of Wilderness Safaris and was the first local guide to be employed by Wilderness, and to this day, Pilot is still friends with the founder of Wilderness Safaris. Pilot has spent many years working as a guide in Botswana, mainly as an Explorer guide for Wilderness Safaris, travelling on land throughout the country and guiding his guests in all the country’s National Parks and private areas.

This job also took Pilot to the regional safari destinations of Namibia, Zimbabwe and South Africa. Recently Pilot has been working, again, as a mobile safari guide, mainly in the Khwai areas of the Okavango and Nxai Pan National Park during the Zebra migration. His greatest claim to fame is to have visited Canada for a Polar Bear Safari and to this day is still the only time he has left the African continent. Pilot is an extremely resourceful man and is fun to be around during a safari where he likes to give his guests outstanding wildlife experiences and service that is second to none. An accomplished vehicle Mechanic, Chef and guide there is no-one better to be with to show you this fabulous country, Botswana.

Thaelo (left below) is our Chef and has worked with Pilot and myself for many years. She can cook up the most fabulous meals on an open fire and you will definitely not go hungry. She has worked her way up from the scullery at Khwai River Lodge to become Head Chef. After some years she headed out on the road with Wilderness Safaris Mobile Explorer trips and now is our Food & Beverage Manager and Chef.

@Atravelynn

Thanks we're trying to be competitive. Pretty much everything is included in the price, there are no hidden costs and we believe we can rival the luxury mobiles and even the lodges in terms of service, with at least one member of staff per guest. Limited to only six guests per trip and a minimum of three nights at each location you will all get the best of the wildlife that is on offer.

6 guests, 3 nts per location. And a reasonable single supplement.  Good stats.  Some day I want to go!

We travelled with Pilot on a mobile safari in Botswana in 1997 when he was still with Wildernes Safaris

He was an excellent guide, good fun to be with and very informative. We had a superb trip with him -we are glad to see he is doing well.
