Zebra pan blur

Captured these guys along the shoreline of Lake Manze, Selous GR- Tanzania.

Skipping water

Most lions have an inherent fear of water, none more so than when they are cubs, here this young female skipped across a shallow section of Lake Ndutu like it was on fire! :)
Light was at a premium here, so a monochrome conversion with a slight warming tint was more forgiving in this case.
Lake Ndutu- Nth Tanzania.

An evening drink

This image was taken in extremely low light, unfortunately (for photographers) in the evening is often the time when most Ele's come down to drink.
Moremi GR, Botswana

The big stare down

It was a hot late October afternoon in the Sth Luangwa when I witnessed the local Nsefu pride take down not one but two buffalo!

An amazing scene to witness that still continued into early morning.

"Metro"

This is Metro one of 3 bros pride leaders of the MGM trio.
Metro, Goldwyn & Mayer, so named for their joint leadership of the "Hollywood" pride. Added a slight warming filter in PS to enhance the B&W conversion

The night stalker

We came upon this fine male leopard whilst on a night drive one hot November evening in Zambia's South Luangwa National Park, he was teamed up with a female and they were on a mating mission.

Cheetah bros silhouette

Looking like something out of a 1940's opening horror film scene, I created this silhouette my simply taking down the exposure and converting to B&W.

The vignette effect is natural and is just the low evening thunderstorm cloud build up.
Would of course loved to have had the third bros up and clear, instead of looking like the worlds longest cat!.....but these things are made to challenge you.
Masai Mara, Kenya Oct 2010.

Waiting for mum

I spent over two hours with this pair (the other higher up) whilst an electrical storm raged close by inthe hope that mum may show, not to be.

Relentless enemies

This was certainly the case on this late and hot October afternoon in the Sth Luangwa when I witnessed the local Nsefu pride take down not one but two buffalo!
An amazing scene to witness that still continued into early morning.

Baobab forest dawn patrol

The Ruaha NP is home to huge areas of the baobab tree, they make for dramatic landscapes, especially when you have the local pride male "grumpy" taking a dwan patrol through them.
Some of these majestic trees have been aged at over 2500 years!

Face off

The "no-tip" lioness and master huntress faces off against one of two buffalo they brought down.
It was a late and hot October afternoon in the Sth Luangwa when I witnessed this amazing encounter that still continued into early morning.

Just a walk in the park

The Ruaha Nat Park that is ;)

On this particular morning we would have seen over 2000 elephant, all making their way to and from the Ruaha River for a refreshment.
It made for spectacular viewing in the midst of a beautiful green season which is the ele's favourite time of year with food in plentiful supply and screamed for a B&W conversion.

Off to hunt

This cheetah mum had just left her 3 very young cubs to head out hunting.

She had safely hidden them in the marsh area where she gave birth. Added a slight warming filter in PS to enhance the B&W conversion.

This female lay threatening claims to an advancing male who wanted to crash the feasting party.

Fantastic additions everyone. B&W really helps to convey atmosphere and mood perhaps more so than colour, at least IMHO. Matt.

Head-on!

I love being able to get this low perspective even though it's tough to do from a vehicle.

Best is to be on foot, but I'd rather a white rhino on foot than a blackie! :D

I found the dead trees poking out of the waters of Lake Kariba quite mesmerising and couldn't resist the temptation to get a bit arty.

@@Game Warden - I'm just chuffed that you ask me to talk about BW editing ....... having just learnt how to do it very recently.

Anyway, this is what I do ........... I use LightRoom (sorry, I'm illiterate wrt Photoshop - but, I ought to learn it)

1.) Basic sharpening as you need to for any RAW image

2.) Next I de-saturate all the colors to make it a BW image. Then I play around with the hue and Luminance sliders to see how it looks

3.) work with Exposure; Contrast sliders ....... if need be

For the giraffe feeding image above - I wanted to try something different - so, I flipped it around to make it look like the pic is taken from the air (also, blurred the edges)

Hope that helps. I'm just learning how to do BW processing - so, I'm not suggesting that this is the right method.......... :)
