So a few days ago as I came in to land, this young Zebra got separated from his Mother and just ran almost into the path of the basket! As i shouted to scare him off he veered away, and circled round behind the moving basket. The passengers were all looking up at me from their seated 'landing positions' with looks on their faces that screamed..."he's definitely a nutter... !" As I was on my final approach, I floated along for perhaps 20m before the basket touched down, and all the while he trotted along behind, weakly barking for his mama. As the basket stopped and the passengers were climbing out, this fellow just wandered around amongst them... I got this picture of one of our Guests just before climbing out myself. We waited and watched for a few minutes while I tried to spot his family... and then saw a small group - about 5 or so adults and one young running past us about 100m away. Recognising they were searching for the foal, I tried to shoo it towards them. Just at that point I realised that the family herd was actually chasing off a Hyena! They ran the hyena off about a hundred meters and then circled back to the other side of the now landed and deflated balloon, all the while the Mother barking for her offspring. The young one hesistated about a minute then, possibly realising that it was safe to leave his new found 'family' (us!)... he walked slowly back and joined his Mama...! What a brilliant start to the END of the balloon flight! And there was yet Champagne to come!
