  1. Hi @Ratdcoops The problem is that your image file is too big. Try reducing the width in pixels to around 1000 (it is currently over 5000 pixels wide).
  2. I don't know if this has been reported before but @Treepol brought this to my attention in January while I was in hospital. I was unable to check it out then but have returned homeTh problem is that when creating a new topic (and possibly elsewhere) the text and images which have been inserted display in a very narrow column when the preview button is pressed. @Treepol saw this using Windows 7 and Firefox and I have now tested with Windows 10 with both Edge and IE browsers, and also on an iMac with Safari. All behave the same way despite Desktop Preview being selected Editor view: Preview view:
  3. I am not disturbed in the slightest. The only rules that apply are those of the competition organisers. If a photograph meets the rules it is legitimate to enter it in the competition. Obviously it is wrong to claim that a photograph was taken in conditions which don't meet the competition rules, but it is difficult to police. Anyway I thought Instagram was for kids to exchange photos and not for serious photographers.
  4. Hi @RobK and welcome! You can practise uploading images with text here in the Help forums.
  5. @kittykat23uk Excellent photos of the quelea which capture the constant movement really well. I’m jealous of your black footed cat sighting as it was in some of the areas I volunteered but I never saw one.
  6. Loved your picture of the riverine rabbit, Jo. Glad you saw enough of it to reproduce it.
  7. Merry Christmas and a Happy New Safaritalk Year!
  8. @Whyone? My only thought is that the links look like redirects which may be blocked by the software here. Check that you are using the full expanded paths to the images on Flickr.
  9. @TonyQ I just checked my iPad and I noticed that in portrait mode the iPad displays the smart phone version of the site, suppressing some graphics such as the bar at the bottom. However in landscape mode it displays the desktop version of the site complete with the support button. You get twice the fun with an iPad.
  10. @optig I only have my Southern African bird book available and it has a similar bird to the one in your message #11. It must be some sort of korhaan (the southern one is a red crested korhaan).
  11. @wilddog It happened to me about a week ago. Nothing I tried would get the tag enabled. When I came back to ST later it worked normally. All of this is on an iPad.
  12. @johnweir, let me know if you have a problem, there’s more than one way to skin a cat.* *no big cats were hurt in posting this message.
  13. Text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text text. @johnweir To insert the image above I centre aligned the cursor below the text since that's how I like my images arranged the Photos and Safari windows side by side dragged the image from Photos I wanted to insert to the desktop dragged the image from the desktop to the attachments bar below the editing window clicked the thumbnail in the attachments bar to insert it in the text double clicked the inserted image to edit its properties - I added an alternative text, and set the width to 800 pixels closed the editing box to finish inserting the image. You can skip the alignment and editing steps if you prefer. I also tried dragging directly between the two windows but it generated an error. I'm using a 27" iMac with Sierra OSX. I hope this helps.
  14. @AmyT RAW images are typically 12 or 14 bit data rather than JPEG's 8 bits so records more levels of light and dark making under or over exposed images easier to improve. So it would be insurance to record both a JPEG and RAW version of each image. But it would take a lot more storage space on your flash cards and hard disk. So there is a cost to the insurance.
  15. How's this? I'm not an expert so I opened in CameraRaw as though it was a RAW file, then hit Auto and took about half a stop off as it tends to overdo things. Tweaked contrast , whites and highlights. I didn't do any sharpening.
  16. Testing Tested
  17. The hood on my EF 100-400 L mark II has a little flap at the lens end to allow circular polarisers to be rotated. I wonder why other lens hood don't offer this. I can't remember ever using a polarising filter on safari though. I don't use UV filters when using a lens hood as the latter offers good protection for the lens. But that's a non-reconcilable controversy
  18. Like @janzin I am waiting and watching. I have bought a Nikon 1 j1 and an EOS m3 off eBay to see what I'm missing and don't really like either of them. They are lighter and have pretty good options but I have to use adapters with Canon lenses on the m3 and then they become heavy. Without an evf I can't focus long lenses. I really could do with a light weight system as I am now confined to a wheelchair and find managing multiple cameras and lenses difficult with no camera bags designed specifically for wheelchairs. A system which could mostly fit into the pockets of a photographer's vest could be the answer.
  19. I don't find the eyes sad. Just a well fed and lazy cat like my cat at home.
  20. @offshorebirder I used to get a similar error message from time to time with the old software. It could be a bug in javascript I suppose if it occurs in such different versions of the website software.
  21. @offshorebirder If I want to embed a gallery picture in a document I get the URL as follows (there may be a better way but I haven't discovered it): I click on the picture, select the size I want, right click on the image and show in a new tab/window then copy the address from the address bar. Next click on Insert other media and select Insert image from URL (e.g. this image from my 2014 gallery):
  22. @offshorebirder You can attach some photos to a section of a report, then write the text, inserting the photos as you go by clicking on each of them. OR Start writing a section of a report and as you need a photo drop it on the attachment area and then click on it after it has uploaded to insert it in the report. It is a good idea before clicking to press return a couple of times and then select the line between and centre the cursor before clicking on the uploaded photo.
  23. @xelas I love the cheetahs in the long grass. I find long grass a bonus rather than a problem and switch to manual focus in a moment, perhaps because I do a lot of practice photographing cats in zoos where manual focus is needed a lot of the time.
