I always thought the problem of tsetse flies was a common African problem, and so I was obviously wrong. How did other countries eliminate them? Was it through the use of insectides or what? The problem seems to be pronounced the more north you go in Zambia, and yet I have not heard it associated with countries to north of Zambia like Kenya or Tanzania...

Wikipedia has a good article about tsetse, en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tsetse_fly.

The article also shows a picture of a tsetse trap. These traps have been used with great success, for instance in Botswana's Okavango Delta. I've seen such traps in Kafue and South Luangwa National Parks.

There are many tourists who complain of tsetse in Southern Tanzania, so I am guessing that they are still there.

Patrick the guide from Mwamba camp tells me the tsetses are diabolical on the Great North Road.

They are still bad in Tanzania (as Twaffle suggested).

As for Kafue.... Eeek!
ZaminOz
Of course bad though they may be form a discomfort point of view; they do have the effect of keeping domestic livestock out of areas that they inhabit.

You can still see them in Botswana - even in the private concessions. They are not completely eliminated by any stretch ......... certainly, not a huge problem as described by ST members from their visits to Kafue etc etc.,

It seems that tsetses do thrive in Miombo woodlands!

At times, they can also be nasty in the Western Corridor in the Serengeti.

Certain areas of Tarangire were famous for being tsetses infested, but, according to my experience, lately they have proven to be less of a nuisance there.

Apart from keeping livestock away, tsetses sometimes prevent also tourists from accessing wilderness areas (this is the reason why I keep on telling everybody that tsetses in Katavi are diabolical wink.gif tongue.gif
