Crocodiles: Raft
Cheetahs: Coalition
Giraffe: Journey
Hippos: Raft
Leopards: Leap
Lions: Pride
Owls: Parliament
Porcupines: Prickle

The correct term is collective noun. Wikipedia has a quite impressive list.

Nice leopard face David Meisel!

A leap of leopards
A sleuth of bears--that one once won me $50!

A spot of safaritalkers

Hey, I saw a coalition of 3 male cheetahs, and a female and cub - all together. What do you call this?

A herd of Red Letchwe? - what is the collective noun for RL?

Bit of a mouthful, but...

An undertakers' convention of Marabou stork

A pouch of pelicans

and...

A tunnel of Safaritalkers (no light at the end of) biggrin.gif

Not African, but...

A mob of roos

A trouble of cheetahs? Thanks ....... sounds cool!

So does, Undertakers convention of Maribou Storks. That's so fitting!!!

Btw, I always thought it was "Pod of Hippos" ......... David Miesel?

Also, must confess ........ for a while I thought it was "Jenny of Giraffee" Because with the accent the Journey is pronounced more like Jenny. I found out something like a safari or two later.

A journey of giraffe is so amazingly appropriate, isn't it!

In New Zealand, this would be called a 'junny of giraffe' wink.gif

The funniest to me is that a completely made-up collective noun (used in a comedy sketch) has since been picked up and used in serious articles by authors who Googled, thought the made-up term was real and included it in their own writing! Then others pick it up from those articles and it's use continues to grow!

Flange was used as a collective noun for baboons in a Not the nine o'clock news sketch called Gerald The Intelligent Gorilla, which is a classic!

You'll now come across references to a flange of baboons, though thankfully, not as often as a troop.

To digress a little...like your blog, David. Love the story about giraffe hunting in packs.

Ever heard of a Obstinacy of Buffalo?
Sute of Bloodhounds?
Tower of Giraffe?
Business of mongoose?
Aurora of Polar bears
Gaze of racoons
surfeit of Skunks
Implausibility of wildebeest.
Drazzel, Zeal, or cohort of Zebra.

I got this from "Beat about the Bush"

The one good one is an overabundance of elephant.

Very poetic dik dik.

A duet of dik diks. I usually see them in pairs, unless there are young ones too.
