To Walk with Lions
7 Spiritual Principles I learned from Living with Lions
Gareth Patterson
Seastone [an imprint of Ulysses Press] 2001
In print

Gareth Patterson, author of a number of books (see below) on the subject of lion, has written a book with a difference. Catalogued as Spiritual Growth/Personal Development – this “Africa” book will appeal to seekers. Agnostics, atheists and cynics could skip this one and go here instead: Somewhere Else... or, alternately read on and make up your own mind.

Gareth has led a life as an advocate, researcher and conservationist of lion; he is the author of a number of books and speaks in these with authority of experience. In 1996 following the death of George Adamson in Kenya in a hail of bullets by poachers – Gareth went to Kenya to assist the orphaned young lions George had been caring for and monitoring. Who among us is unfamiliar with George Adamson and his role in our understanding of lions? These youngsters were not yet wild and needed the constant attention and care and commitment to ensure they made the transition from human habituated to living free. Gareth provided them that.

To Walk with Lions is a guide of principles he learned from lions. The 7 principles are illustrated with stories from his intimate knowledge and understanding of lion behaviour, they are:
  • self reliance
  • fellowship
  • willingness to care
  • affection
  • determination
  • courage
  • loyalty

They are principles for living illustrated by the great golden animals’ lives. It is a unique perspective. This is a personal book, a warm and inviting book – a look broader and deeper into living. A book that’s primary purpose, as far as I can tell - is to remind us of our connection to earth/nature and how to act with integrity within it.

Gareth includes recommended meditations at the end of each chapter – if one is so inclined – this helps concentrate on the principles, then, an invitation is extended to explore how the principles fit in the way we do or may wish to live our lives.

The author is obviously sincere in his beliefs and shares them with us, in trust, that we may, like him, learn from lions.
